Summer Honeymoon in Venice-A destination far from Romantic

Venice is beyond beautiful… and am I lucky to have visited this dream of a city.
Infact in my strong opinion, considering the fact that this canal-ed beauty is sinking a couple of millimeters every day, you should get on the first plane to Marco Polo!!
And yeah, so the never dying romantic in me bugged my husband (even before we go married LOL – so yeah I knew he was the one to stick around for having married a ‘bugger’) to book tickets to Venice for our honeymoon, and the poor guy did.
After a successful train ride, we got there on a Sunday night and woke up early the next morning brimming with excitement to explore The City of Canals and Gondolas!!
But much to our dismay, it really wasn’t as dreamy as we expected, and here is why:
Crazy crowded with insanely long queues
Summer is the high (peak) season in Venice, which in turn means that it’s going to filled with tourists from all around the world. This results in you having to wait for hours in loooooong lines in front of most major attractions. Trust me, long lines under a scorching sun is not romantic (AT ALL). This also cuts down the number of attractions you can visit in a day or forces you to rush between attractions on a short vacation , and no one really wants that on a ‘once in a lifetime’ trip, right?
And all that standing is going to leave you so tired, that the only love you will be making that night, will be with your bed.
There is a lot of walking involved.
Another reason you will prefer your bed to your partner is that, you will be dead after all the walking. All means of road transportation in Venice ends at Piazzale Roma. Beyond that you can either walk or get around by means of water transport. While the latter is an excellent way to get from one island district to another, walking is pretty much how you can get around from one place to another in the mainland of Venice.
The added fact that you are bound to get lost in the alleys more than once just adds to the number of daily steps on your smart watch. So unless you want to write on “Ways to stay tired on your Honeymoon “, I don’t really recommend you do this. Also this leads to my next point…
Getting lost in the alleys of Venice
Quoting a personal incident, “Let’s leave now, we can come back later and charge the phone. I want a great shot before Rialto gets crowded “ , I nagged my husband out of our room and onto the 6.00am waterbus. Although on the bright side, we got that shot, on the downside we got lost in an alley (that I swore I knew we had come through), with nearly dead phones. So it took us a while to follow the direction signs, hungry and confused. Well, shortly put, it didn’t sit so well with Vishi and yeah arguments are best avoided on any honeymoon, yeah?
The romantic Gondola ride comes with an expensive price tag
What’s a honeymoon in Venice, without a romantic Gondola ride? Well, before you picture yourselves in a beautiful dress, floating on a Gondola, serenaded by the Gondolier in his red and white striped shirt and hat, please make sure you have 80 – 100€ spared for the same. The rates will vary depending on the time of the day, the canal, the Gondolier and whether or not singing was involved.
Don’t expect authentic Italien cuisine in Venice
Due to its flourishing travel industry, Venice presents with alot of business opportunities, not just for its natives, but also foreigners. So you will find that few restaurants are actually owned by Venetians or further operated exclusively with Italien staff. So just keep in mind that the “Italien Pizza or Pasta” you eat may not be of authentic Italien cuisine (so hey! No expectations or judgements there.) Okay?
All this said, Venice is something everyone should experience in their lives, if given a chance. So here are some recommendations to help you make out of your short while.
– Travel in the off Season (between Oct- March)
– Don’t try to see everything! Try to enjoy the places you visit to the fullest.
– Do extensive research and decide before hand, the places you want to visit and if possible categorize them into lists titled : “Must See” , “Will See if Possible” , “Will See if there is extra time”. This will help you prioritize your travel.
– Get a Venice City Pass ( Read all about the Venice City Pass here )
