Perched on the sun-kissed slopes of the charming village of Zermatt with a view of the majestic Matterhorn, that is undeniably THE BEST in Zermatt, is the Overlook Lodge by Cervo Mountain Boutique Resort, a member of the Design Hotels. The resort is one of the best and the only “ski in – ski out” hotel in Zermatt village. The Overlook Lodge is located about 300m below the Mountain Resort but offers the same charm and spirit of Cervo.

Highlights :

The lodge is an easy ten-minute walk from the main train station. With the lift at the Sunnegga funicular base station you can reach right at the entrance of the Cervo Mountain Resort, from where it’s a five minutes’ walk to the Overlook Lodge. 

Thanks to the complimentary pick-up and drop-off shuttle service (only for arrival and departure), checking into our apartment with all our luggage and equipment was a piece of cake.  

The lodge is located on the panoramic road – Riedweg, that offers the best views of the Zermatt village and the Matterhorn.

The accommodation comes with access to the ski lockers on the ground floor and the wending machine and washing machine on the first floor.

Since the lodge is run by the Cervo Mountain Resort, breakfast at their restaurant Bazaar and spa services at the Mountain Ashram Spa can be availed at an additional cost.

ACCOMODATIONS :

The Overlook Lodge consists of five apartments of which we stayed at the comfortable and romantic Vista Studio. Styled in a modern design with an alpine touch, the studio is the perfect abode for two. The apartment came with a large cozy handmade Hästens bed, a lovely kitchen, complete with a dining table for two and a spacious bathroom equipped with a bathtub and shower. The small writing desk tucked into the wall of cupboards had a small selection of books, a wall mounted TV and a vibrant speaker from Marshall. Ample storage space was assured by the tall cupboards that also came with a storage safe for all our valuables. The highlight of the apartment was without doubt the lovely balcony that, in our opinion offers not only a completely unobstructed, but also THE BEST view of the proud Matterhorn and the village of Zermatt. You can even spot the Gornergrat Bahn, Europe’s highest cogwheel train, as it makes its way upto Gornergrat while enjoying your morning coffee.

SPA AND WELLNESS AT THE MOUNTAIN ASHRAM SPA :

The spa at the Cervo Mountain Resort consists of a heated 42 deg Japanese Onsen pool, a natural pool, a sauna and the coziest relaxation room all offering beautiful views of the Matterhorn. There are also two comfortable Tea Yurts where you can enjoy a glass of herbal tea and relax. And if this isn’t relaxation enough, you can always book a massage session.

DINNING :

Since our Vista Studio came with a kitchen, we took total advantage and cooked ourselves some delicious homemade meals more than once. However, if that’s not your style then there are three fabulous restaurants at the Cervo Mountain Resort that you can try. We personally LOVED all three, and here’s what we recommend. 

BREAKFAST AT BAZAAR :

You couldn’t go wrong with this incredibly charming restaurant styled with walnut tables, surrounded by benches and chairs with fabric cushions giving off a lovely bohemian vibe. There is a breakfast buffet arrangement of fresh breads straight out of the oven, fresh fruits, cheese,juice, sides like hummus and yoghurt and cereals to satisfy the morning hunger pangs. However, the best dishes can be ordered from the extensive breakfast menu (also complimentary), that range from waffles and pancakes to Egg Benedict and delicacies like Momos and Shakshuka.  There is also a pinewood terrace for those who prefer to dine outside with magnificent views of the majestic Matterhorn. Monogrammed wool throws casually laid on the benches keep things cozy if the weather gets chilly (which it most likely will).

BRUNCH AT THE MADRE NOSTRA :

The quaint and charming rooftop bar at Madre Nostra lets you soak in the sun and gorgeous views of the Matterhorn as you enjoy a late brunch. The great food served here is simply a cherry on the cake.

APRES-SKI IN THE AFTERNOON :

The pinewood terrace is transformed into one of the most popular Après-Ski bars in Zermatt come afternoon. Upbeat live music teams with the breath-taking Matterhorn as a background as you enjoy a drink and some food to fuel yourself after a day of skiing. This plus a great service, you can’t really ask for more.

CANDELLIGHT DINNER AT THE TRADITIONAL FERDINAND :

It is a laidback yet romantic restaurant for the more traditional Swiss specials like the fondue, raclette and grills. Facing night view of Zermatt village, we enjoyed an amazing candlelight dinner of Swiss raclette with a combination of meat to grill and the special Lumberjack Fondue perfected with mushrooms, bacon, fried onions and herbs. Trust us when we say nothing is more satisfying than baked baby potatoes and delicious bread dipped in melted cheese. We also totally recommend the special Birnensorbet (Pear Sorbet) and the raspberry flavoured Vintage Sour Beer.
